The TIMED satellite was launched in December 2002, near solar maximum, and has continued its revolutionary exploration of the thermosphere through solar minimum. As a preview to the TIMED observations, we present a modeling perspective of the thermospheric changes expected during the solar cycle. The corresponding energy balance, dynamical and compositional effects are simulated using the Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIMEGCM). We review how large variations in the solar radiation drive major changes in thermospheric and ionospheric structure above about 100 km altitudes.
