The PICARD space mission is reinforced by ground-based instruments, and the whole program works as an original ground and space synergy centered on: (I) the space PICARD mission itself, composed of a microsatellite already accepted by CNES and scheduled for launch by 2006-2007. The main solar scientific objectives are dedicated to the detection of low-gravity modes and to simultaneous measurements of the irradiance of the Sun, its differential rotation, its shape; (II) the ground part, composed of a set of instruments which will be put into operation at the Calern Observatory (South France). One of these is called MIRESOL (Measurement and Identification of active REgions at the SOLar limb) which has for objectives to detect and to locate automatically the spots and faculae at the solar limb. This new device records CCD images mainly in the Ca II line known to be very sensitive to the solar activity. The accurate determination of the heliographic latitude at limb where the spots (or faculae) begin and end is essential to separate diameters which are free from contamination. Their automatic detection and the development of an improved algorithm is a capital point in the future analysis of the PICARD space data. After giving a quick overview of the scientific aspects of the whole program, we will focus on the MIRESOL apparatus and we will present the first results.
