Recovery of electrical conductivity in terrestrial planets is possible from satellite magnetic data provided that the planet response to induction by external sources (IMF, ionosphere, magnetosphere when existing) can be characterized. The satellite records a continuous time series of the geomagnetic field that mixes the time and spatial varying part of the transient field. A time and space spectral expansion of the data provides linear combinations of the external and internal spherical harmonic spectrum of the field. The internal transient field is the result of induction in the conductive planet. Different modelling strategies have been tested on earth satellite date to obtain quantities that may be used in an inverse approach to derive the electrical conductivity of the planet's crust and mantle. These techniques are applied on the MGS data for Mars and on synthetic data sets for Mercury.
