The collision of the supersonic solar wind with the supersonic flow of the interstellar medium results in the interaction region. This region is bounded by the termination shock from the solar wind side and the bow shock from the side of the interstellar medium. The flows of the solar wind plasma compressed at the termination shock and the interstellar medium compressed at the bow shock are separated by a tangential discontinuity termed the heliopause. The stability of the heliopause has attracted the attention of reserachers for almost two decades. A brief review of the stability analysis of the heliopause based on the normal mode approach is given. The main attention is paid to the recent study of the absolute and convective instability of the near flank regions of the heliopause. These results, in particular, resolved an old contradiction between the instability of the heliopause found on the bases of the normal model approach, and its apparent stability found in many numerical simulations.
