Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Polarities
Scientific paper
It has been known for many years that the interplanetary magnetic field polarity can be inferred from ground based measurements of either the geomagnetic field at high latitudes or the north-south anisotropy of the cosmic ray flux. We present the results of a systematic comparison between inferred and directly measured polarities in the period from January 1971 through December 1992. This allows to fill gaps in the spacecraft observations, thus obtaining a more continuous coverage of the field polarity which may be useful in many studies related to solar variability in time.
