The Windows Around the World program (www.windowsaroundtheworld.org) is a web based exchange program that helps elementary school students and teachers explore the environment and cultures in different areas of the world. As part of the program, visual data is collected using web cameras that are installed at each of the participating schools. Images are taken hourly and cataloged in a database. By storing and cataloging the images we are able to use them in unique ways and convey much more information then is usually attained through web cameras. This visual data allows us to demonstrate daily, seasonal and yearly changes in the environment in polar, temperate and tropical regions. It also provides a method of demonstrating complex systems such as the solar and lunar cycles. The collection and use of the visual data is providing a unique way to explore the Arctic and to compare it to temperate and tropical locations.
