Investigations of mantle convection with temperature- and strain-rate-dependent viscosity have shown the existence of three fundamentally different convective styles. By varying e.g. the Rayleigh number, the viscosity contrast or the strain-rate dependency of viscosity either the so-called stagnant lid regime, the episodic behavior or a state characterized by a constantly mobilized surface is obtained. Our studies suggest that this transition may not only be induced by a change of parameters but also occurs temporally. For example, a system initially showing an episodic behavior falls into the stagnant lid mode of convection as time proceeds. In this contribution we present a 3D fluid dynamical model that shows a change in the convective style for temporally constant parameters. We developed a mobilization criterion that describes the stability of the stagnant surface layer. This allows for a quantitative analysis of the transition to a temporarily mobilized surface. The criterion is used to predict the occurrence of further surface mobilization events. It furthermore provides insights into the temporal characteristics of the newly found transitional regime.
