The irradiation of the surface of icy satellites and ring particles by magnetospheric ions, energetic particles and electrons leads to the ejection by sputtering, of neutral species into the atmospheres of these bodies. Secondary ions are also emitted, and they can be picked-up by the local magnetic field and, eventually, form part of the magnetosphere. Secondary ion emission yields and ion energies are strongly affected by the presence of electric fields near the surface produced either by electrostatic charging or by the intrinsic ferroelectric effect. We study the energy distribution of protonated water clusters emitted from thin water ice films by keV ion irradiation. We will report our new findings concerning the effects of ice thickness, temperature and morphology on secondary ion emission, and discuss how these parameters can affect the escape of ions from icy bodies and their injection into the local plasma.
