This paper reports a preliminary orbital analysis of Satellite 1958 Zeta. Expressions are given for the orbital elements as derived from the analysis of about 780 observations (minitrack observations are not included). A discussion of the orbital acceleration and related problems is presented. The report also gives the geographic position of the satellite at 5-minute intervals and a table of the observations received prior to February 1959. This analysis is preliminary in nature since the photographic observations have not been reduced precisely and only first-order theory has been used. Most of the work was performed during the lifetime of the satellite for tracking purposes.
