I will review possible pathways to making a planet that might harbor life and cover processes that we think lead to the formation of rocky, terrestrial-type planets, from the formation and eventual agglomeration of molecules and solids in interstellar and proto-stellar environments, to the accumulation of key surface ingredients such as water. I will also discuss the origins of the complex organic chemistry that must have existed on a young Earth and presumably on any planet that can harbor life. Present evidence suggests a key role is played by off-world processes, in environments that laboratory studies of atomic and molecular physics may be able to duplicate.
