A worldwide investigation of volcanic dust has been instigated because of the problem of distinguishing between volcanic and meteoritic particles found in terrestrial sediments. The observing stations have participated by obtaining volcanic dust samples at active and recently active volcanoes in Hawaii, Central America, and South America. Physical and chemical analyses of these samples have provided criteria for identification.
