Recent optical radar observations of echoes from the upper atmosphere were reported. The results of numerous successive nights of observations indicate weak, sporadic echoes at altitudes between 110 and 140 km. These results are summarized and presented in graphic form. The echose are tentatively interpreted according to a model of meteoric fragmentation that shows that by progressive fragmentation in its flight through the atmosphere, a meteoroid should demonstrate an enhancement of cross section responsible for these echoes. The atmosphere would be working as a "filter," and the average size distribution of micrometeorites would vary with the height. On the basis of the radar observations and of the model of fragmentation, an attempt can be made to estimate the influx on earth of meteoric material that is undergoing fragmentation and is of a size suitable for observation.
