We propose a detailed study of the soft spectrum of the Narrow Line Radio Galaxy 3C 33. An analysis of RGS archive observations has revealed possible signatures for photoionized plasma in this source. Triggered by this exciting result, we propose a XMM-Newton observation of 80 ks ksec to confirm the first X-ray detection of ionized plasma in a radio loud type II AGN. Our main goals are: i) to define the real nature of the soft excess in 3C 33, confirming the presence of a photoionized plasma; ii) to provide detailed information about the physical conditions of the photoionized gas, producing the best example for a comparison between Radio Galaxies and Seyfert 2s.
