We propose a 130 ks observation of the narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 1044. With this long baseline observation we expect to perform variability analysis to discriminate among models of soft X-ray emission: is it reprocessed EUV emission reflected from a disk corona, relativistically blurred emission or smeared absorption. In addition, the high resolution RGS spectrum will help understand the properties of the ionized absorber. We will model the high S/N spectra at different time and flux slices to further constrain the models. Through the variability analysis we will be able to determine the absorber location, which is crucial to measure the mass and energy outflow rate.
