One of the prime objectives of the Heliophysics Explorers (HELEX) Solar Orbiter (SO)-a candidate mission for ESA’s Cosmic Vision programme and Solar Probe Plus (SP+) of NASA are in situ measurements of energetic particles, fields and plasmas in the inner heliosphere in regions not accessed by s/c so far. We present advances expected in SEP research in the context of the new observations. IAA/NOA participates as a Co-I in Solar Orbiter/EPD.
