Astrochemistry is a young and interdisciplinary research field which investigates the chemical processes in molecular clouds and solar-system environments. The major tools for the investigation of the chemical processes which lead to the formation and distribution of organic molecules in space are astronomical observations from ground and space, laboratory simulation experiments and theoretical models. A combiantion of those methods allows us to monitor organic molecules during the development of planetary systems and to investigate their importance for the origin of life. In this paper we review the current knowledge in observational astronomy as well as supporting experimental and theoretical work on ice analogs, prebiotic compounds and meteoritic material in the laboratory. We discuss how molecular astrophysics can provide constraints for the formation of solar systems and the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the
