The role of the thermal velocity of ions on the dispersion characteristics of the ion cyclotron waves is studied. An expression for group delay time which includes the effect of thermal ions is derived and studied numerically. It is shown that thermal effects are pronounced near the ion cyclotron frequency and increase as the temperature is raised. The proton density is determined using the dispersion relation; it is shown that this will be overestimated about 5% if the effect of temperature is not included. The theory of spatial and temporal cyclotron damping for proton whistlers is studied and used to determine proton temperatures. The results are discussed in the light of data published in the available literature.
