The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC)/Esrange and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is proposing a joint European/American effort to establish a new capability for medium duration heavy load scientific balloon flights from Sweden to Canada. The flights would be launched from Karlsborg, Sweden (58.5 degrees north latitude) in the June-July time frame when stratospheric winds would carry the systems westward to Alberta, Canada for termination and recovery. Latitude excursions are not expected to exceed +/-3 degrees. Total flight duration would be approximately 7 days. Balloon size could be as much as 1.13 mcm with total payload weights of up to 3600 kg. Allowable science weights would be approximately 2100 kg with very liberal limitations on physical payload size. Diurnal altitude excursions would range between 30 and 38 km. Scientists would utilize redundant flight proven systems for over the horizon telemetry and commanding.
