Measurements of plume dispersion by imagery of rocket motor exhaust are considered as the technique to investigate the atmosphere diffusivity. This approach is based on the assumption that the spatial structure of the rocket plume is caused by the atmospheric gravity waves (GW). Plume images can be rationalized on the basis of the plume dispersion model suggested in this report. Two main parameters (largescale diffusion coefficient K and Lagrangian timescale TL) of it can be determined in accordance to the parameterization of GW's spectral characteristics. This parameterization scheme allows us to calculate all kind of one-dimensional GW spectra at any height of the middle atmosphere taking into account the real vertical profiles of the background wind and temperature. Hence K and TL can be obtained to simulate the plume expansion. The model calculation results agree well with experimental data measured at altitudes of 18, 24, and 30 km in the stratosphere.
