Knowledge of the distribution and temporal variability of water vapour in the lower stratosphere is important for a variety of current scientific problems. However, our knowledge shows some surprising gaps, given the wide range of observational and modelling power now available. With a focus on European research, this review addresses recent findings based on airborne, balloon-borne and space-borne observations contributing to the following key questions involving water vapour: How accurate do we need and can we measure UT/LS water vapour? How is air entering the stratosphere in the tropics dehydrated? Do we understand microphysics in the polar winter stratosphere, especially in the Arctic? Is there a long-term change of stratospheric H2O? And if so, what is driving these changes? How dry is the extratropical lowermost stratosphere?
