The relationship between EUV brightenings in the transition region and dark mottles in the chromosphere is studied using data obtained in an observational campaign between the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) on SOHO and the Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at Hida Observatory. We found several examples of EUV brightenings accompanied by upflowing dark mottles in the chromosphere. This suggests that EUV blinkers are formed by the heating of dark mottles or spicules.
