Scientific paper

An examination is conducted of two successive substorms which occurred during a southward interplanetary magnetic field on July 14, 1970. The first substorm was weak and the second one was intense. Similarities and dissimilarities between the two substorms are considered. Attention is given to interplanetary magnetic field variations, magnetic variations in the auroral latitudes, mid-latitude magnetic variations, disturbance vectors in the polar cap, and questions of plasma injection at the synchronous orbit.
