We have used narrow-band near-IR imaging of redshifted H(alpha) to identify star-forming galaxies associated with damped Ly(alpha) absorption line systems with redshifts between 2 and 2.7. The galaxies associated with damped Ly(alpha) systems should be characteristic of the normal field population. In fact, we have found H(alpha) objects in most of the fields surveyed so far, suggesting that we are sampling representative galaxies at these redshifts. Here we propose to obtain near-IR spectra of the galaxies to confirm that the narrow-band excess is indeed due to H(alpha) emission at the redshift of the damped Ly(alpha) system. Once the redshift is verified, we will use standard nebular diagnostics to determine if the photoionization is due to star- formation or an AGN. If star-formation is the source of photoionization we will use H II region diagnostics to determine the star-formation rate, reddening, and metallicity of the gas.
