A true twilight enhancement has been detected for O2(1 sigma sub g) emission in which the variation is closely coupled to the sun's zenith angle. The measurements were made in the (0,1) band of O2 near 8640-A wavelength. The enhancement is always much stronger in morning twilight. A consideration of the possible sources of O2(1 sigma) leads to the conclusion that at dawn the ozone density at 100-km altitude approaches 100 million per cc, which is considerably higher than that predicted in recent model calculations.
