We have discovered 12 new low redshift damped Ly(alpha) systems during the course of a large HST-FOS UV spectroscopic and 21 cm survey of known MgII absorption line systems. Our goal is to study the statistical evolution of the damped systems for z< 1.7, i.e., over 75% the age of the Universe, and to elucidate, in detail, the properties of these new systems. The most pressing need is to identify the galaxies that are associated with the damped systems. Here, we propose to obtain spectroscopic redshifts for absorbers with z< 0.8. We were hoping to complete the first phase of obtaining spectroscopic redshifts during our KPNO 4-m CryoCam run in April 1998. However, out of the allocated 2.5 nights, we lost 1.5 nights to cloudy skies and had poor seeing or transparency during the third. Therefore, we are resubmitting the proposal to obtain multi-slit spectra with the 4- m CryoCam to measure redshifts for galaxies in 5 fields. With these data we can make a comprehensive study of a significant number of damped Ly(alpha) galaxies, deducing their luminosities, impact parameters, colors, morphologies, and stellar populations for the first time.
