Scientific paper

An attempt is made to determine why a nonlinearity arises in the relation between the ion production rate and the square of electron density in the ionosphere at heights of 100-150 km. The nonlinearity effect is considered for midlatitudes and for the E-layer in the auroral zone. The basic cause of the nonlinearity is found to be changes of the effective recombination coefficient due to the influence of excited NO(+) ions.
