In this presentation, I will try to give a brief overview of the current status of research on nearby active galaxies (recent results, trends...). In particular, I will pay attention to results obtained on four major topics: the central regions (BLR, link to the central black hole mass determination studies); the starburst/AGN connection; the extended nebulosities (NLR, ENLR, nuclear outflows); and the fueling of the central engine.
