The globular cluster system of NGC 5128, the nearest gE galaxy, has been the target of a number of studies which have all been limited to small regions of the galaxy and/or have not gone particularly deep, and, thus, have not yielded extensive information on either the cluster metallicity distribution or the mass (luminosity) distribution. With 2 nights on the 4m + BTC, we will secure Washington photometry of the system's entire radial and luminosity extent and (a) measure the metallicities of ~ 1000 globulars to a precision of < 0.2 dex. and determine the metallicity distribution of the clusters, establishing whether it is uni-, bi- or multi-modal; (b) investigate any metallicity gradients and the spatial distribution of any distinct cluster populations; (c) derive the luminosity function to an apparent magnitude depth comparable to that of the faintest Galactic globulars. These observations will allow us to make detailed, quantitative comparisons to the predictions of globular cluster and galaxy formation scenarios. We will be able to define more effectively the cluster formation history and its relation to the remarkable halo star formation history suggested by recent HST data.
