Bright galaxy number counts are fundamental to understanding the formation and evolution of galaxies in the Universe. However, observations so far show them to have an appreciably steeper slope than expected, making uncertain the normalization of the local luminosity function, a vital datum for interpreting the counts at faint magnitudes and the distribution of galaxies even at moderate redshifts, z~1/2. We propose to use the CCD facility on the Curtis Schmidt Telescope to accurately define what is happening in the local Universe by observing random areas of sky totalling ~300 square degrees in the R band from 14 to 20 mag. Observing in R allows us to use grey time. The observations will also address the important question of the power in the galaxy correlation function on scales of ~10-20 h^-1 Mpc.
