We are undertaking a study to test theories of the formation and stability of spiral structure in disk galaxies and the effect of dark matter on these properties. K-band imaging of a large sample of galaxies is required to trace the stellar mass distribution of these galaxies, and thus the perturbation in the mass density due to spiral arms and bars can be mapped. Such observations will also provide a useful tool for investigating classification schemes of spiral galaxies. These observations will form the first part of a much larger project. We also plan H(alpha) imaging of these galaxies in the future, in order to determine the strength and location of star formation with respect to the strength and location of density waves and sub-mm observations to trace the amount of cold gas and dust in these galaxies and test if these quantities have an effect on the classification of spiral galaxies.
