A hydromagnetic-dynamo theory for the geomagnetic Sq current is developed under the assumptions of a simplified thin-shell model and a constant conductivity tensor. Mode coupling due to the temporal and latitudinal variation of the electric conductivities are neglected. The electric coupling between the dynamo regimes of the E and F layers also remains unsolved. The model is used to calculate, in a self-consistent manner, the mutual coupling between neutral wind and plasma. This coupling depends on two parameters: a frequency related to the Alfven velocity and a frequency related to ohmic dissipation. In particular, the model provides some insight into the underlying physical process and points out some unsolved problems related to the relative importance of the semidiurnal (2, 2), (2, 4) and (2, -3) modes. In general, the results are not inconsistent with Taffe's (1969) calculations, although they contain more quantitative information.
