The paper describes the Millstone Hill (42.6 deg N, 71.5 deg W) incoherent scatter radar and the data analysis techniques used to determine the temperature of the E region. The characteristics of the semidiurnal tide from 105 to 130 km were derived from ion temperatures measured on six days in August 1974 and four days in October 1975 using the Millstone Hill radar. Substantial differences in the amplitude and phase of the semidiurnal tide were found in the two observing periods, with the tide being larger in October 1975.
