A sounding rocket equipped with electrostatic analyzers performed charged particle measurements during the expansive phase of an auroral substorm near local midnight. Ionospheric ions are accelerated up to 500 eV at 90 deg to the magnetic field lines in the 400-600 km height range. Accelerated ions are observed throughout the whole flight above 400 km. Correlations between ion intensities and precipitating electrons are present, the maximum ion enhancements occurring in coincidence with sharp decreases in electron precipitation and, in the largest event, in coincidence with intense field-aligned precipitation. These observations suggest an ion acceleration mechanism which involves the generation of electrostatic ion cyclotron waves by a current-driven or beam-plasma instability.
