Scientific paper

The paper discusses charge exchange processes in the upper atmosphere involving H and H(+) in two energy domains: a low energy domain around 1 eV and a high energy domain with keV energies. New ideas are presented concerning (1) substantial hydrogen ion loss from invariant latitudes above about 45 deg (L value about 2), (2) a new model for the changing proportions of various loss processes for hydrogen as a function of solar activity, and (3) the ionization production near E-region altitudes associated with the equatorial aurora.
