Theoretical and experimental evidence is presented that sporadic-E clouds are often curved concavely on their lower side so as to focus a radio echo to the ground. The horizontal extreme of observed clouds appears to be approximately 40 km with a central core of very high electron density about 5 km across. To model the observations, a wind shear pattern with a horizontal scale of 5 km is required. Because of their shape which leads to the angle of arrival of echoes changing rapidly the clouds are often difficult to track across the sky using a h.f. radar system. Individual clouds are often observed to be tilted about 10 deg from the horizontal.
