A multiple mirror telescope is under construction on Mount Hopkins, near Tucson, Arizona. The system comprises six 72-inch Cassegrain telescopes mounted symmetrically about a central axis. The individual images are brought to a common focus on the central axis by means of two plane-mirror reflections in each of the beams. The blur image of a star is theoretically less than one second of arc. Alignment between the images is maintained by automatic sensing and control. An altazimuth mounting with a large vertical yoke is planned. The entire building in which the telescope is housed will rotate 270 deg, with the exception of the central pier on which the telescope itself is supported. Darkrooms adjacent to the telescope will be provided.
