The results of an investigation of nighttime ion and electron temperature variations at 300 km above St. Santin (44 deg 3 min N, 2 deg E) are presented. A small systematic departure of the ionospheric plasma from thermal equilibrium was observed, with the electrons colder than ions by 10-20 K. This effect could not be attributed to statistical or systematical errors. The temperature difference apparently reflects the tendency of the electron gas to cool faster than the neutral and ion gases due to its high thermal conductivity; in the absence of energy coming from the protonosphere extra energy is provided to electrons by ions in collisions in an amount proportional to the temperature difference.
