The melting temperature of 14 metals has been calculated, using the same dislocation-mediated melting model that had previously been used to calculate the melting point of iron at ambient pressure and at the pressure of the inner core boundary. The purpose of the present study was to check the general validity of the method.
The agreement between the observed values of the melting point and the values calculated, using values of the physical parameters found in the literature, is very good, considering the uncertainties in the parameters: the calculated values agree in general with the observed values within less than 25%, and within less than 10% for nine metals. The inferences made earlier on the temperature of the inner core boundary are thus confirmed.
