Scientific paper

Observations of precipitating ions during magnetic storms, upwardly accelerated ion beams at low and at high latitudes, and ring current composition are used to detail the current knowledge of magnetospheric ions which are of ionospheric origin (primarily O(plus) and H(plus), and to a smaller extent, He(plus) and O(plus plus)). These observations are correlated with theoretical acceleration and/or circulation mechanisms, such as ion-cyclotron wave-particle interactions, parallel electric fields, and adiabatic convection.
