A brief description is given of the mission of the Venera 15 and 16 probes, which were launched in June 1983 and reached Venus in October 1983. The main objective of the probes was to use sidelooking radar to study the surface and atmosphere of the planet. Information contained in images transmitted to earth on October 20 is discussed, and the goals of further studies are mentioned.
