The current understanding of the generation of the solar wind and its
propagation through the solar system is examined. Use is made of results
of direct space-probe (e.g., Luna, Venera, Pioneer, and Viking)
measurements as well as of radio-occulation measurements. Particular
attention is given to the effect of the solar wind on planets.
