Conformal invariance requires a massless scalar field to couple nonminimally with gravity; as a result its stress tensor is no longer positive. Improvement is nevertheless shown to be compatible with positive energy for the total system, provided the scalar field's amplitude does not exceed the (inverse) Einstein constant. The system's properties in presence of cosmological, mass and self-interaction terms are also treated.
