The highland margin in Protonilus and Deuteronilus Mensae is dissected into flat-floored valleys and angular mesas - the so-called fretted terrain. Both valleys and mesas are bordered by steep scarps 1 - 2 km high. Debris with linear markings occurs on valley floors and around the base of mesas. The debris is 500 - 800 m thick, and extends generally no more than 20 km from the scarps. The present study, based on examination of Viking images, agrees with many of Squyres' (1978) observations and with his hypothesis that the debris was lubricated by interstitial ice; it disagrees, however, with details concerning the duration of the process, the source of ice, and the climatic control on location.
