Matrix material in 20 ordinary chondrites of different groups and types has been irradiated with 1.4 MeV deuterons. The current in the 5 × 20 μm2 spot was between 100 and 300 pA. The targets were moving along 256 or 512 μm long tracks during the measurement. Elemental distributions were obtained by measuring protons, produced in the 12C(d,p)13C and 16O(d,p)17O nuclear reactions, simultaneously with deuteron-excited characteristic X-rays of Si, S, Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni.
Carbon enrichment associated with troilite (FeS) or metal grains was detected in five meteorites. The results suggest that a C-rich layer is enwrapping these grains. Depending on the depth of the grain in the sample, C was observed either around or in the center of the grain. Other meteorites show C enrichment in the matrix, or are homogeneous with respect to carbon distributions.
