The Northern Lights arise from the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's magnetosphere, atmosphere, and a region in between these two. The physical processes giving rise to the Lights, the cause of the Lights' structure and dynamics, the source of their energy, and the reasons for their occurrence in particular areas are addressed. The role of Alfven waves, field-parallel currents, ionization and dissociation reactions, and feedback is considered. The ionosphere's action as a screen and end resistance are discussed, showing how different types of electromagnetic radiation and heating and acceleration of inert gases result.
