The present understanding of auroras is reviewed. Contemporary auroral physics is examined. It is noted that the aurora is an electrical discharge phenomenon in low-density air, that the magnetosphere is a gigantic natural electric generator that powers the aurora, and that the generator is controlled by the variable solar wind. An analogy is made between the magnetosphere and a TV picture tube, the aurora being the 'picture' formed on the 'TV screen' to which the upper polar atmosphere corresponds. Evidence of auroras on Jupiter and Saturn is noted, and the possibility is considered of providing long-range forecasts of the occurrence of auroras.
