What has been learned about Venus from the various probes sent there is summarized. The planet's heat budget, its developmental history, its vulcanism, and its tectonics are discussed. Comparisons and contrasts with the other small planets and the moon are made. Possible reasons for its topography, consisting of three major plateaus in a planetwide plain, are suggested, as are several possible reasons for the disappearance of its water, including photodissociation via sunlight and evaporation into space, reactions with unoxidized gases from the interior, reactions with iron and other components of magma, and mechanisms for drawing water into the interior.
