The chemical composition of the Venusian atmosphere, and what the composition could signify about its origin, are discussed in the light of data from probes into the atmosphere. A gas chromatograph aboard the Venus 12 mission found traces of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere, suggesting a volcanic origin. In order to determine whether volcanos actually exist on the planet, the Venus 13 and 14 sondes were equipped with Sigma 2 chromatographs, whose development and function are discussed. These sondes found krypton, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, and carbon oxysulfide. The significance of these findings are now being evaluated.
