It has been deduced from a wide range of evidence that the Solar System formed as a unit some 4.6×109yr ago by an accretion process (probably from the cold) involving material having the cosmic abundance or something close to it. The general properties to be expected of the System can be deduced from various physical arguments and a comparison is then possible with the objects actually observed.
