Examination of the daily variation of the scintillations of VHF radio waves at the equatorial station Huancayo showed a major peak around 2200 hrs LT and a minor and broad peak around 1200 hrs LT during any of the years 1968-1976. Regarding the seasonal variation, the daytime scintillations showed peaks around equinoxes; while the nighttime scintillations were maximum around November and February with a minor minimum around December-January and a major deep minimum around June-July months. Regarding the solar cycle variation, the daytime scintillation did not seem to have any significant variation with sunspot numbers. On the other hand, the nighttime scintillations (peak value or the whole nighttime values) decreased with decreasing sunspots. Average post-midnight scintillations also decreased slightly with decreasing sunspots but the cumulative scintillation index indicates slightly higher values during low than during high sunspot years. The scintillations at Huancayo were closely associated with range type of spread-F in respect of nocturnal or seasonal variations as well as in respect of the effect of the geomagnetic activities. There were some apparent anti-relations in respect of long term solar cycle variations of the two phenomena which are primarily due to the fact that bottomside ionosondes study only the part of the medium traversed by the satellite borne radio beacons.
